What is microfiber?

Microfibre is an artificial textile made of ultra-fine fibres. It is made from polyester, polyamide or a combination of both. It is a sought-after fabric because of its remarkable softness and the way it regulates moisture. That is why microfibre is often used for garments such as shirts, trousers and even underwear.

What kind of material is microfibre?

Microfibre is a synthetic fibre made by melting the raw materials and pressing them through fine openings, a process called extrusion. This creates wafer-thin threads. After they have hardened, they are bundled by the hundreds or thousands into yarn, and that yarn is then woven or knitted into usable textile.

The advantages of microfibre clothing and underwear

Because the fibres are thinner than a human hair, microfibre has a silky-soft texture that feels pleasant on the skin. Garments made of microfibre also hardly crease, even after a long day of wear. On top of that, the fabric is lightweight, breathable and quick-drying, which makes it ideal for busy days and strenuous activities.

The disadvantages of microfibre clothing and underwear

Microfibre is made from petroleum products, which makes production a burden on the environment. The fabric also releases microplastics when washed. In addition, microfibre is prone to wear and pilling, and it does not cope well with heat: in the dryer or under an iron it deforms faster than natural fibres. People with sensitive skin may also react to the fibre.
