If you want to wear braces in combination with a suit, the idea is to choose braces with a loop on them so that you can fasten them inside the trousers.


Because there are different types of braces, you do have to take this into account. It can vary between the X or Y model. The difference between them is the number of pieces with which you can fasten the ends. The X model has to be fastened with more buttons, namely 8; the Y model only needs to be fastened with 6.

Should it really not work out and you have no partner or mother who can do this, then this is a piece of cake for the tailor. The only thing you have to pay attention to is that you attach the buttons the wrong way round on the inside of your trousers. This is so that the buttons also can't cause irritation when you have the trousers on.

Braces that have to be fastened with clips are very easy. As you can see in the picture, the clip opens and closes easily.


Because there is also a difference between the X and Y model, you see here some images of how these can be attached to a pair of trousers.


The braces that have to be fastened with a loop and buttons are a bit trickier. You can pull apart the loops at the end of the brace and then fasten them around the button. In the picture you can see how to pull the loop apart.

What you should pay close attention to when attaching braces is that you fasten them next to the loops of your belt.

Put on braces

Once the braces are properly attached to your dress trousers, you can put them on. This is nothing special, but you should know that they are to be worn over your shirt and not underneath. You can create a simple and stylish outfit by combining braces with a shirt, loafers and stylish dress trousers. If you don't want the braces to be visible, you can easily wear a blazer over them.

Style Tips

There are indeed a few rules to wearing braces. Below are a number of tips so that you know what you can and can't do if you want to wear braces:

  • It is absolutely a no-no to combine braces with a belt; this looks strange and is doubling up, because both accessories hold up your trousers.
  • In the past it was an absolute don't to wear your braces visibly; nowadays this is fortunately super trendy and your braces are allowed to be seen.
  • Wider braces can make your build look broader, which is why broader or sturdier men are better off choosing slightly narrower braces.
  • It doesn't matter which colour of trousers you combine with your braces; they don't have to match exactly.
  • It's nice to create colour contrasts in your outfit, so don't wear light blue braces in combination with a light blue shirt.
  • Most braces are about 120 cm long; if you're a bit taller you can also choose longer braces of, for example, 130 cm long. This provides extra wearing comfort

Wearing braces with a bow tie

By wearing braces in combination with a bow tie, you can make unique style combinations. If you want to play it safe, you can choose to buy braces and a bow tie in the same colour. You can also experiment yourself with making stylish combinations. Braces with a plain design are nice in combination with a checked bow tie. A satin bow tie combined with printed braces can also create a unique look. If you're a fan of classic braces, you can also opt for a casual wool bow tie, which gives a soft and stylish appearance.

Suspenders paired with a suit

When wearing a suit, you're not supposed to wear a belt; if you nonetheless want to make sure your trousers fit well, braces offer the solution. If you wear braces under your suit or tuxedo, they are invisible; if you plan to wear braces under your suit, we recommend choosing black or dark blue braces. If you like to make your braces stand out after all, you can also choose to wear brightly coloured braces or braces with a cheerful print.
